Canoe on Georgian Bay
Sabine Island, like much of the French River Provincial Park and the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve is only accessible by water. Like the Voyageurs before us we paddled our canoe out the river right into Georgian Bay. But we only ventured into the bay as far as a few islands near the river's mouth. On our way back up the river we would stop at every unoccupied campsite - to swim, to have lunch or just to check it out for future reference. At one site I walked down a path were Ron had just been and saw an Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake right beside the trail. I froze and yelled, "snake!" Ron came running back but much to my surprise without a camera. The snake was just lying in the sun, perhaps digesting its most recent meal. Ron grabbed a camera and a big lens and took several photographs from a safe distance. The timid snake never felt the need to rattle any warnings. Eventually it just slithered away. It was our first time to photograph this Threatened and protected species.
